But romantic love? She sacrificed that one to make a mark on the world. And I’m tired of seeing people, my people, our people sacrificing at all. I think she hoped, maybe quietly to be the last one. But she never stopped thinking about the person she left behind. Looking through her archives, it’s clear. When my grandpa found his wife, when my dad got married, when I got married, every single time she wrote a letter to Josephine like she was still waiting in the south with tea and pumpkin bread. Like she was simply waiting for her best friend to come home, so they could really start living. I think this letter got away from me slightly. But I did want to say two more things. The fist is that, if you ever want to come visit, have some pumpkin bread and talk in person about these two fantastic women, you’re always welcome. As far as I’m concerned, you’re family. The second thing is that I found a Hundred and One relic you may be interested in. I don’t know the proper term but I think it’s a decoder. I just thought my grandmother doodled on her letters when she couldn’t think of the next sentence. But, it looks like those doodles meant something. Maybe Ruth and Josephine have more surprises for us. Yours, Gerry
