Page 2: I don’t know if you’re aware, and I’m sorry if this comes as a shock to you. But my Nana Ruth and your Miss Josie were in love. According to her letters they did everything together. When they were younger and would cuddle or kiss, they would usually just chalk it up to being kids. But when they separated and wrote to each other, my grandmother realized more and more that this was more than just friendship for her. But then the Year of Fire happened. Race riots over the country and Ruth in the middle. I think, from my one-sided view, that Ruth cut Josie off, not out of shame or fear. But she knew that if she kept thinking about a lover she left behind, she’d leave the movement to love her. It’s beautiful, and it’s heartbreaking , and I’d like to know more. And I’m hoping you do too. I gathered a couple things with this letter to prove my word is more than stories. Please, if this is of any interest to you and you have any other info, please write me back. Sincerely, Gerald Tulsa Forrest III
